Stella Maris Chapel, Lamar, TX
Lamar, TX is located at the north end of the Copano Bay causeway on State Highway 35 and Farm Road 13, approximately ten miles north of Rockport and approximately forty miles north of Corpus Christi, and was the first coastal town in Refugio County. The House of Schoenstatt Sisters of Mary has a large complex in Lamar where the Stella Maris Chapel (photo on right) is located. The Chapel celebrated 150 years on May 25, 2008.

Big Tree, Lamar, TX
The Big Tree is one of the most famous live oaks in the world and was named Texas State Champion Coastal Live Oak in 1969. It is believed to be one of the largest in the United States. The Big Tree was located near the old town of Lamar, TX. During the Civil War, Lamar was bombarded and destroyed by the union navy. What remained were the ruins of a few old shell crete (oyster shell concrete) homes, a Catholic chapel, and the Big Tree. According to climatologists, the Big Tree has survived between forty to fifty major hurricanes, numerous floods, droughts and wildfires. The Texas Forest Service estimates the tree to be over 1,000 years old. The Big Tree is Texas' largest and quite possibly oldest Live Oak tree. It possesses a circumference of over 35 feet, is more than 45 feet tall and has a crown spread of 90 feet. Record or Champion Trees are determined by their girth, their spread and their height. The almost constant gulf breeze limits the height of this oak, as there are many Live Oaks that surpass this tree's height, however when the tree's girth is factored in, it makes this one the Champion Live Oak in Texas.
